How to Care for Suede and Leather Shoes

Good shoes last longer when you look after them a little. You do not need a lot of products or time. A few habits, done regularly, keep suede soft and leather smooth. Here is a simple routine for the materials in your Pretty River wardrobe.

Before the first wear

Apply a protector spray made for the material. For suede, use a suede-safe water and stain repellent. For smooth leather, a light leather protector or conditioner is enough. Spray from about 20 cm away, let it dry fully, and test on a small hidden area first.

Caring for suede

  1. Brush after wearing. Use a soft suede brush to lift the nap and remove dust. Brush in one direction.
  2. Treat marks quickly. Use a suede eraser on dry marks. Rub gently, then brush again.
  3. Keep it dry. If suede gets wet, blot with a clean cloth, stuff the shoe with paper and let it dry naturally, away from heat.
  4. Avoid heavy rain. Suede can darken or stain when soaked. Wear leather on very wet days.

Caring for calf leather and lambskin

  1. Wipe after wearing. A soft, slightly damp cloth removes dust and light dirt.
  2. Condition now and then. A small amount of leather cream keeps the surface supple. Use a thin layer and buff gently.
  3. Handle scuffs gently. Rub a scuff with a clean fingertip first, then add cream in a matching color.

Caring for satin

Satin marks easily, so dab spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth and do not rub. Avoid soaps and water. Keep satin shoes for dry days.

Storing your shoes

  • Let shoes rest for a day between wears, so they dry and keep their shape.
  • Stuff them lightly with tissue or use shoe trees for flats and loafers.
  • Store them in a dust bag, out of direct sunlight, which can fade color.
  • Give bags the same attention: stuff them so they hold their shape, and keep them in a cotton dust bag.

When to see a cobbler

If a heel tip is worn, a sole is wearing through or a seam has opened, a cobbler can often repair it. Fixing small things early makes a pair last much longer.
