A Parisian Autumn Capsule: Shoes and Bags

Parisian style is less about owning a lot and more about wearing a few good things often. A capsule wardrobe follows the same idea: a small group of pieces that work together, so getting dressed takes a minute. This autumn, start with three pairs of shoes and three bags.

The three shoes

1. A leather ballet flat. The everyday anchor. Wear it with jeans, trousers and dresses. A smooth calf leather or lambskin flat in black, tan or cream goes with almost everything.

2. A loafer. For days that need a little more structure. A pleated square-toe loafer works with trousers and skirts, and it handles a full day on your feet.

3. A slim-sole trainer. For weekends and travel. A low, clean trainer looks right with a midi skirt as well as jeans.

The three bags

1. A suede tote. Large enough for a laptop, notebooks and a water bottle. A medium or large tote in a neutral shade is the workhorse for work and errands.

2. A shoulder or underarm bag. A compact shape that sits close to the body. It is good for dinners, gallery visits and days when you want to travel light.

3. A small crossbody. Hands-free for a weekend in the city. Choose a soft, structured shape in the same tone family as your shoes.

A simple color plan

Choose two or three neutrals and stick with them: black, chocolate brown, taupe or cream. When your shoes and bags share a tone family, almost everything matches, and you can add color through a scarf or a knit.

Care and keep
